Nika, Betty Marcon, and Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA), Elizabeth Crosby @ezcrosby gathered on the air to have some Real Talk on SCOTUS’s recent decision. As a Court Appointed Special Advocate, Elizabeth Crosby supports abused and neglected foster children in court cases, and she can testify that there is nothing “pro-life” about forcing unwanted births and increasing the population of mistreated children. Betty is proud to have recently protested against the recent overturning of Roe v Wade, and shared some of the actions she took to make her voice heard.
In this episode, Nika, Betty, and Elizabeth vent about what is on everyone’s minds at the moment given the recent madness of SCOTUS’s decision, as well as the current state of women’s healthcare and reproductive care as a whole, and where many improvements are needed.
While many (predominantly white) conservative couples are posting social media photos saying “We’ll adopt your baby!”, Nika and Elizabeth provide solid responses to those who claim that adoption is the end all be all response to banning abortion. Nika sheds light on the foster care to prison pipeline and the fact that black children are less likely to be adopted, and Elizabeth defines the term “unadoptable” which is a disturbingly common phrase that is thrown around in the foster system.
While this topic is intense and difficult, there is hope and there are ways we can enact positive change. Betty shares about her experience protesting against her local legislation which also recently enacted anti-choice laws, and serves as an inspiration to those who wish to take action.
Elizabeth deep dives on her work as a CASA, what her work entails and how CASA’s provide a powerful impact in foster children’s lives. They provide children with resources and care, advocate for them in court, and are a stable adult in their life who is not there just to get paid. Anyone can learn how to become a CASA, and Elizabeth provides resources on how people can learn more and get involved to help children who will be negatively impacted by recent events.
